Esopus Drawings takes the form of a 58-page sketchbook containing 25 drawings that I completed during an August 2018 residency at the MacDowell Colony. The subject matter of these images includes my studio visits with artists such as Mickalene Thomas and Beth Campbell, artists’ projects from William Christenberry and Carlos Amorales, Esopus events at New York City arts venues The Kitchen and White Columns—as well as the Foundation’s own Esopus Space—and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the issue’s editorial and production processes. With these drawings, I was able to revisit, in an intense, deeply personal way, all 25 issues of Esopus, dozens of artists’ editions, hundreds of events and exhibitions, and thousands of rewarding interactions with the people—contributors, supporters, readers, interns, trustees, colleagues and friends—I’ve been fortunate enough to share this project with over the past decade and a half.
