Neil Goldberg: Other People's Prescriptions

NEIL GOLDBERG: OTHER PEOPLE’S PRESCRIPTIONS

Book published by Esopus Books (2019). Format: Paperback, 13 x 10 inches, 80 pages.

The book, which includes an introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Louis Menand, features a recent series of photographs by the New York–based artist Neil Goldberg. Over the past 25 years, Goldberg has created a remarkable body of work that incorporates photography, video, installation, mixed media, and performance to explore embodiment, sensing, mortality, and the everyday. New York — in particular, the rituals, gestures, and accoutrements of its inhabitants — has always played a major role in his work, and the city features prominently in Other People’s Prescriptions. This perfect-bound volume comprises 40 color images from Goldberg’s series of the same name, the subjects of which are bespectacled (and unwitting) New Yorkers photographed from behind to afford viewers a glimpse of the city through their corrective lenses.
