In 1994, I cofounded (with Martin Fox) and became the editor of Scenario: The Magazine of Screenwriting Art, which published full-length screenplays accompanied by interviews with their writers. My interview subjects included a range of screenwriters and directors, including Danny Rubin (Groundhog Day), Carole Eastman (Five Easy Pieces), Claire Denis (I Can’t Sleep), Millard Kaufman (Bad Day at Black Rock), Todd Haynes (Safe), the Wachowskis (Bound), and Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (Heavenly Creatures). We commissioned filmmakers such as Robert Towne, Whit Stillman, and David Mamet to contribute keynote essays to various issues and established a partnership with the Sundance Institute to create an annual issue devoted to four films from that year’s Sundance Film Festival. Scenario was selected as one of “The 50 Best New American Magazines” in 1994, and received favorable mentions in publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Variety, The Village Voice, and The New Republic. I served as the publication’s editor until 1996.
