I was always obsessed with Book of Love’s 1985 club hit “Boy.” When I dove into music-making after ceasing the publication of Esopus, the first song I wanted to cover was this incredible track. In 2019, the song resonated, at least to me, as an anthem about gender identity. Along those lines, once again, I found a treasure trove of visual material in The Prelinger Archives. I found four films in particular from its collecton—Cindy Goes to a Party (1955), Good Grooming for Girls (c. 1940s), Moment of Decision! (c. 1960), and Physical Aspects of Puberty (1963)—that, with a little bit of noodling, seemed like the perfect visuals for the video.
