I was given a copy of the first issue of designer Alexey Brodovitch’s iconic magazine Portfolio by Martin Fox, the editor of Print (and, eventually, the cofounder of Scenario) in the early ’90s. I was already obsessed with the endlessly inventive covers Brodovitch (1898–1971) created every month for Harper’s Bazaar, but the dynamic work he did on this short-lived publication inspired me to make—and design—magazines of my own.
