When I moved to Brooklyn in 2012, I was spending a lot of time on the subway commuting to and from Esopus Space, the Esopus Foundation’s exhibition venue in Greenwich Village. I spent a lot of time photographing my fellow riders—with a particular emphasis on their hands. This image seems to me to encapsulate everything I love about New York City, and for that reason, I decided to use it for the cover of Esopus 24 (2017).
