Each issue of Esopus included a CD of music commissioned according to a particular theme. For Esopus 22: Medicine, our first annual issue in 2015, I asked 10 musicians to create a song inspired by the bodily organ of their choice. Okkervil River front man Will Sheff contributed “Famous Tracheotomies,” a song about celebrities who have had emergency tracheotomies, as he had. Will performed the song live at an issue-related event we held at The Kitchen in the fall of 2015; here, he displays his own tracheotomy scar at my request in a rehearsal earlier in the day.
