Esopus 10

Published by The Esopus Foundation Ltd., Spring 2008. Format: Perfect-bound magazine, 9 by 11.5 inches, 164 pages.

Esopus 10 included artists’ projects by Yvonne Jacquette, Dulce Pinzón, and Berend Strik (the latter a hand-sewn multiple). The issue also presented a series of color stills from At Sea, the stunning 2008 film by acclaimed experimental filmmaker Peter Hutton, the never-before-seen “fictional” scientific drawings of Doug McNamara, a sewn poem excerpt from Jen Bervin, a selection of Robert Guest’s lunchbox notes to his two children, short fiction by Lesley Clayton, and Angus Trumble’s “1929 in Retrospect.“ In addition, Esopus 10 featured new installments of two regular series: Modern Artifacts, presented in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art, featuring never-before-published documents from MoMA’s archives (in this case, selections from the sketchbooks of former MoMA director René d’Harnoncourt), and Guarded Opinions, in which museum and gallery guards were asked to offer their critical perspectives on the art they oversee.

The issue’s audio CD took “Good News” as its theme: For it, 12 musicians were asked to choose a piece of news that they interpreted as a positive one and use it as inspiration for a new song. Participants include Ryan Adams, Neko Case and Carl Newman, Atlas Sound, Langhorne Slim, Busdriver, Marnie Stern, Gowns, Man Man, and The Real Tuesday Weld.
